A capriccio view of a Mediterranean harbour (? Livorno) with visiting Turkish merchants transacting business on the shore amidst classical ruins; shipping in the harbour beyond

Oil painting on mahogany panel 20 x 25 inches

Provenance: private collection, London

Gerard-Philippe Colin (Gerrit Colyn) was an 18th century Flemish landscape and topographical painter who was active from about 1756 until 1771. His style is distinctly retardataire, and is a development from the earlier 18th century Flemish landscape painters such as Balthasar Beschey. His technique is notably fluid, using wet-in-wet glazes built up in layers.

The present signed picture seems to be the only recorded Italianate view by the artist
